Alexandre Larin, famous artist, former Soviet citizen, comes back from the USA to Russia. He comes to see Masha Bersenjeva, a young beautiful woman whom he knew when she was a child. At the time he was going to marry her mother Anna, but falling in love with the daughter, Larin got frightened of sinful love and betrayed both women. Six years have passed. Anna married a rich Russian business man. Masha is engaged. Larin’s appearance destroys the strange, painful but stable life of the mother and daughter. Larin’s visit is a hopeless attempt to come back to the country which does not exist, to love which has vanished. The past overtakes him as punishment.
